International partners: Swerea MEFOS AB

Need and motivation of the project:
Mustavaaran Kaivos aims to re-establish vanadium production in Finland initially by extracting vanadium from the by-products of the steel industry and subsequently by re-opening the Mustavaara vanadium mine in Taivalkoski, northeastern Finland. The company is planning to start vanadium production from slag by-product from SSAB in a smelter to be built at the port of Raahe.

Main set targets:
The EXTRAVAN project focuses on the development of pyro- and hydrometallurgical techniques to extract vanadium from vanadium bearing slags and high vanadium iron ore concentrates. The project also aims to find solutions and provide recommendations to manage waste and effluent water fractions formed in the production process, to minimize the impacts on the environment.
